VACANCY:
MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Jazzart Dance Theatre, a 53-year-old non-profit organisation, is recognised as South Africa’s oldest contemporary dance theatre company. The organisation continues to play a vital role in shaping the country’s dance landscape through artistic excellence, professional training, and meaningful community engagement.

Jazzart seeks to appoint a dynamic and strategic Marketing and Communications Manager to lead the development and execution of integrated marketing and communication strategies across all programmes, productions, and initiatives.

This role is central to shaping and amplifying Jazzart’s public presence, driving audience development, and ensuring that all communications authentically reflect the company’s artistic identity. The successful candidate will bring both strategic insight and creative sensitivity, with a strong understanding of marketing within the performing arts environment.

1. Key Responsibilities

a. Marketing Strategy & Leadership

  • Lead the development and implementation of integrated marketing and communications strategies

  • Identify and grow target audiences, positioning the organisation effectively within the performing arts landscape

  • Drive brand development and ensure consistency across all platforms and touchpoints

  • Align marketing initiatives with organisational priorities and artistic vision

b. Content & Creative Direction

  • Shape and manage the company’s brand voice in alignment with its artistic identity

  • Lead the conceptualisation of compelling, visually engaging, and emotionally resonant content

  • Translate artistic work and creative processes into impactful narratives and storytelling

  • Oversee the development of content across press, digital platforms, and marketing materials

  • Ensure a cohesive and high-quality creative output across all communications

c. Campaign & Project Management

  • Plan, implement, and manage marketing campaigns across productions, programmes, and events

  • Coordinate timelines and deliverables across multiple concurrent projects

  • Manage relationships with external service providers (designers, photographers, videographers, agencies, media partners)

  • Work closely with artistic, production, and administrative teams to ensure alignment and delivery

d. Team Coordination & Leadership

  • Lead and coordinate marketing activities across the organisation

  • Collaborate effectively with internal teams to support organisational goals

  • Manage and brief external collaborators and creative partners

  • Provide guidance and mentorship to interns or project-based team members where applicable

  • Foster a collaborative, responsive, and creatively driven working environment

e. Performance Monitoring & Reporting

  • Monitor and evaluate campaign performance using key metrics (e.g. audience engagement, reach, ticket sales)

  • Generate insights and reports to inform strategy and decision-making

f. Budget Management

  • Develop and manage the annual marketing budget

  • Oversee campaign expenditure, ensuring cost-effective and impactful delivery

2. Qualifications, Skills & Experience

a. Essential

  • A tertiary qualification in Marketing, Communications, Media Studies, Public Relations, or a related field

  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ proven marketing and communications experience within the performing arts or broader creative industries, with demonstrated experience in marketing live performance or artistic programming

  • Proven ability to lead projects and deliver on strategic objectives

  • Strong understanding of audience development, brand positioning, and engagement within the performing arts context

  • Excellent copywriting, communication, and interpersonal skills

  • Proficiency in digital marketing tools and platforms

  • Strong organisational and leadership skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

  • Ability to collaborate effectively and build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders

b. Advantageous

  • Experience within the dance sector

  • An established network within the performing arts, media, or cultural landscape
