WHAT TO EXPECT

WHAT IS THE MERAKI DANCE FESTIVAL?
Launched by Jazzart Dance Theatre in 2025, the Meraki Dance Festival responds to a clear need in our industry: collaborative spaces where emerging and established choreographers, independent artists, and dance companies can create, test ideas, and build the industry together.
Meraki means to do something with soul, creativity, and love; to leave a piece of yourself in your work. That spirit defines the festival. It is not only a performance platform, but a space for meaningful exchange, partnership, and shared growth.
More Than a Performance Platform, A Dance Ecosystem
The Meraki Dance Festival functions as a living ecosystem, fostering collaboration across artists, companies, and training institutions. Inspired by global “Boutique Festivals,” the programme prioritizes high-impact works of 5–30 minutes. These short works encourage experimentation, spark new partnerships, and serve as seeds for future commissions and full-length productions.
Each performance presents a dynamic range of artists and genres, from emerging voices to established companies. This diversity reflects the breadth of South Africa’s movement languages and encourages dialogue across aesthetics and generations.
The intention of the festival does more than showcase talent. It creates breathing room for conversation, reflection, and connection. It also bridges professional divides that often isolate artists and instead nurtures a culture of dialogue and collective artistry.
The festival is not simply an event you attend. It is something you enter — a shared space of making and witnessing. Every ticket, every partnership, every conversation helps shape a cultural future where dance remains central to how we understand and express ourselves.
