Grond was commissioned by Nico Dekker for the Museumsuferfest 1998 in Frankfurt, Germany. This was the first time Jazzart Dance Theatre had been invited to perform overseas. The piece was inspired by the famous speech by Thabo Mbeki, entitled "I am an African".
